e 2 a is practicing architecture and urban design. Architectural and urban projects are conceived as an interdisciplinary process, as a multiple authorship. The conceptual development is a synthesis of an analytic perception of the context and a hypothetical, programmatic approach, outlining a conceptual and an operative interpretation of the contemporary condition.
The body of works stresses a claim on diversity. The difference and the specificity of the individual task motivates a composed team of architects, engineers, advisors of building technologies and material research, process and cost managers, artists, scenographers, movie makers and others for a common intelligence of space production.

Exploring the height becomes symptomatically the only mechanism to multiply the granted surfaces. The result is a fairly accidental placement of towers. The high-rise apartment building is less a landmark but a result of a more site specific motivation: a “contextual” form of locally based high-rises in a relatively compact scale. The shape of the new project allows freeing the neighborhood from any impact of shadow resulting in a two side’s inclination. The housing takes advantage of the inclination. Continuous terraces to the south and to the west generate a great exposure and transfers the potential views into an organized system of a tribune. The base of the project incorporates this existing storage building and houses the new rehearsal stages of the Zurich Opera House.

To be outside means to deal with the presence of all the terrace holders. The client’s need of extraordinary privacy was enhanced by the position of volumes, generating a micro context, quasi their own neighborhood. The remaining land will become an inaccessible but cultivated jungle. Access is organized through a serpentine road in the south, reaching the utilitarian house. The main stairs give access to the entry court.

It goes back to the rules of heritage, to organize further buildings on a site in order to accommodate the families' need of increased spacial demands. Along the Jonas Furrer Quarter in Winterthur, the houses refer to the former industrial age, forming a housing compound with villas, presidentially placed and sequentially perceivable. The new house occupies the corner of the lot, leaving the presidential placing of the old villa and adding a new contextual interpretation to the existing sequence. The triangular form allows for keeping the existing garden free of any constructions. Three apartments are organized within the slender, triangular block. The form of the building renders entirely different impressions regarding size and form. Though very contextually thought out, the building remains a stranger among the old villas.

The chambers fulfill precisely identified purposes, the voids can anticipate to all the rest yet to come: the chambers are conceived for individual family members, the void to meet and be together. The house is a free standing volume on a long subtle slope, slightly rotated in plan. Its inclined roof, approx. parallel to the ground, puts the building in relation to the existing types of country houses. The façades underline the volumetric appearance of the void, acting as eyes and observing the beauty of the landscape. The entry hall, the garden access, the dinning area, and the family den form the key activities within the void. A sculptural staircase and a double height space mark the centre and receive natural light through a large skylight. Since the chambers maintain their diverse and personal atmosphere, the voids are kept homogeneously with continuous materials.

Facing mainly in one direction, they consist of a terrace, a glazed panorama side and a building volume that is buried in the slope. Stepped buildings are implants in two respects: their volume is buried into the slope and they have a Mediterranean flair untypical of the area in which they are built. These characteristics, which are greatly valued, have been reduced here to their basic components. The building has been fitted into the steep site as a severe, constructed raw concrete volume. A relationship between the building and the outside space has been kept to a minimum in order to emphasise the implant-like nature of the building, and is only visible on the terraces; the greenery that surrounds the building seamlessly becomes part of the adjoining meadow and vineyard.

The client’s program defined an explicit type, with equality among the users as a requirement – a high-end housing for foreigners and expatriates unable to find residential conditions to match their expectations. The context for once was unique, virginal and untouched, in a private park – one of the last remaining protected retreats close to Zurich, with two designated areas in which the housing projects were to be built as two separate islands. The design provided a rigorous location for democratic divisions with vertical layering, ensuring that everyone would have an equal relation to the park. The vertical stacking expresses a menu, with superimposed living models, one on top of the other; a sunken infrastructure, an open-plan, a chamber work of individual rooms and a summerhouse on the roof.

One singular gesture: a retaining wall, formulating a split, a section of the site; a division of upper and lower land. The basement storey contains the bedrooms, the adjoining rooms are partially buried and the garage is set even deeper into the slope. The living space is a horizontal section that is positioned so as to provide a wonderful view of Lake Zurich. In order to emphasise the different character of the bedroom- and living room storeys, these sections have been combined using one monumental gesture: A solid, dark concrete slab resting on the base mutates to form the rear wall and finally the large protrusion of the strong, flat roof. Together with the storey-high glazing on three sides and the terrace set in front of the building, an unbroken space is created with a magnificent cinemascope view of the panorama. A sloping wall section that follows the line of the stairway, only opening up in the living-room storey to provide a clear view, braces the ceiling board.

The architectural strategy reflects the generic program of a mansion, a living on the ground and sleeping in the pitch, and reverses this condition into two horizons. The first is a base, incorporating all spatial need of individual rooms, such as office, guest and children areas freeing the second horizon completely of any spatial separation. The second level follows the given envelope and is conceived as an A – frame house. The ground level introverts itself and generates privacy. The upper A – frame allows a long distance view.

Their program posed a problem since it was almost too big for the site. In order to avoid residual left-over, a continuously wrapped plane organizes the two houses in one large gesture. As a result the boundaries between the units are blurred and a series of terraces are created on each level. The slope of the site and the views both ofthe lake and the vineyard are the generating factors for the positioning and the specific articulation of the plane. Enclosed and open spaces are woven together in one ensemble with different levels of privacy or exposure and consequently, different foci in view, organizing their sequence.

A Janus head, twenty-one by twenty-one meters, a good size to live on one floor. A platonic condition is made specific by two elliptical cut-outs, resulting in a series of vis-à-vis, the public and the private, the landscape and the building. Out - and indoor become integral programmatic parts, highly articulated. The garden reverses its role, no precious left-over, but two chambers rendering the idea of a garden that enters the house.

On the other hand, to provide a solution for any conceivable circumstances, specific demands are made of the constructive design of the building system. The combination of these parameters makes uniform connecting elements essential, in order to enable the greatest degree of freedom when adding individual elements. At the same time, the spatial aspects should not be neglected. For this reason, spacious modules were created, in which the steel construction is both cost-effective and precise. A catalogue of building components has been created, which allows the clients to assemble the house according to their own needs. The completed prototype is a one-storey residential house, divided into several sections and surrounded by courtyards. The house functions both as a solitaire or as part of a dense, carpet-like housing estate.

The building forms a big scale but structured volume responding to site’s manifold context. The use of the site’s margin allows the development of various types of apartments and establishes a contemplative urban courtyard which adds value on residential use. This project for residential building refers to the typology of initial Zurichberg houses of the Moderne and transfers it into a contemporary building. The Zurichberg house is characterized by its generous apartment layout, its orientation to the lake and the clear separation between day and night zones. Eight apartments are planned on three floors and an attic storey. Based on the City’s regulations for building outlines, limitations for balconies and oriels, a structure is developed which is characterized by its niches and alcoves on each floor. Shifting floors individually uncover the private outside space in the form of loggias, balconies, terraces or gardens and varies the layout of each apartment.

A site that is currently difficult to imagine for an extensive housing program. Garages, car parking, warehouses and the main studios of the Swiss Television define an extreme and rare temporality of context. Three programmatic parts, the office building, the ateliers and townhouses as well as the high rise condominium formulate a first “protagonist” urbanity through a close group of buildings and a resulting inner plaza. The position of the slender tower puts the existing high-rises in sequential order. The atelier and town houses are continuously set back and create a site familiar scale.

Its main characteristic is the typological diversity of the buildings: in the surrounding area, every type of building can be found. Paradoxically, it is the single buildings loosely arranged in this heterogeneous location that have the greatest integrative strength. The four buildings continue the concept of the buildings already present, however they also have an unusual density, as well as creating a continuous, fluid outside space. Each of the apartments is designed as a sculptural unit across one storey, although the exterior gives no hint to the apartment’s size: The collective concept of a multi-family house has made way for more privacy. Balconies alternate with bay windows and are offset in such a way that on each of the storeys, intimate outdoor spaces are created that are protected from view. The deep balconies flanked by the outer walls and ceilings create an additional space, a threshold between inside and outside.

How far could one drive an architecture that profoundly reflects a schizophrenic relationship of modern life, its attachments and dependencies versus an agricultural and romantic idyll with a complete abundance of settlement? The interpretation: the inner and outer condition; five houses with oscillating views, built with a solid oak façade, interpreting the cladding of farmer houses, territories that cut into the roofscape and open up individual private outdoor spaces, invisible to others. The outdoor space remains an agricultural surface, a cornfield where maintenance and technical cutting becomes design.

The new building occupies the corner of a small city park. The design concept is both radical and pragmatic: based on a very minimal budget, it clearly prioritizes how much money should be spent in which areas. While the office storeys are organized efficiently and most economically, the spacious conference level cantilevers into the park and emphasises its function as the prestigious centre. It seems as though the inconspicuous office cube above the ground floor has been split in two and an elegant, tone-storey villa has been implanted into it – a combination that gives the building an appearance that is on the one hand more stately, yet on the other hand reserved, fitting to the mission of the Foundation.

In 2005 the project got lost due to a radical reduction of the educational budget of the city. A year later the existing temporary pavilions started to leek. They asked us to replace the provisional pavilions with a new school building. The budget was a third of the former one, and the competition design could not be adapted. The building structure is a modular and repetitive order to layout structure and rooms. The light elements of the outer facade, which surround the buildings and the training grounds, are standard meshes and are allowed a short construction time. Along the track field a highly densified faculty building organizes all classrooms and administrative programs, along the forum a three storey low building creates a new collective center integrating the main auditoriums, central library, the campus direction, shops and facilities. The design stresses a maximum of polarity between track field and the existing university buildings. The low center allows a maximal impact of the well-known existing architecture by Swiss architect Fritz Haller. The introduction of a subtle system of stairs bridges the considerable difference of topographic height and establishes a new common agenda as a stepped and framed outdoor landscape.

The resulting panopticum and its perspective of the center is being considered a national heritage. The prison has been gradually extended. The five fingers have meanwhile extended “heads”. In order to maintain a respectful new extension, the servicing program will be removed from the five-star and integrated in a new freely standing service building. We design an industrial building with an optimized ratio of surface vs. façade. Since it was forbidden to produce any sight contact with the existing prison, the building became “blind”. Galvanized stressed sheet metal was used to create a continuous curtain allowing the introduction of daylight for the inner factory and servicing surfaces.

The collection of Aarau’s city development and historical tracking remains in the tower. The new extension combines functions of temporary exhibitions with the institution of the city forum resulting in an accessible podium for discussions and thematic exhibitions on the capitals identity. The design takes the aspect of synergy and combinatorial argumentation further and creates a “vitrine”. The highly transparent glass cube can be altered in any museological setup and performs as a place to be occupied. The achaic character of the Schloessli tower is encountered with a slender, highly reflective structure, slightly hovering over the medieval massivity.

In contrast to the commercial and office surfaces which are housed in form of slender and high volumes, the HCU is slightly rotated and accentuates on the pier’s edge. The HCU is structured with three solid, horizontal layers leaving three large spaces in-between. The upper limitation of the tower-like volume with its polygonal site forms the jagged silhouette of the three-part shed roof. This characterises the building as a studio. Beneath the roof is a high, airy room, which is suitable for painting as well as music. The “crown” gives the relatively small building an emblematic shape and its own characteristic identity that can hold its ground against the main building. In the North, we proposed a space that reflects, like a mirror that plays with absence and presence, hectic and calm permanence and change; a place that can enhance the archaic myth of crossing the Alps, transforming the territory into a sensual experience. A center point of access opens a journey into windings. Water cooling pools, maintenance and truck access, electricity substations and switchboards become an integral part of a logistically produced landscape. In the South, the narrow site mutates into a vertical wall. Proximity and distance outline a thematic frame of the future condition. In this way, the city is extended down to the lake and a visual dialogue is created between the new tower and the existing high-rise buildings, which heralded the new urban developments of the sixties. In addition, a large centre will be built in the quarter between the railway lines and the banks of the lake, an improvement scheme that began with the construction of the southern station square on the occasion of the Expo 02. The tower will be constructed in steel and will be painted and bolted together on site in the style of shipbuilding. Due to the honeycomb structure of the shell, whose rhombus sections have a bracing effect, the tower has a cage-, or aviary-like appearance. Three parallel layers have been positioned behind this coarsely meshed veil, linked in the centre by a double flight of cascade steps.

The design concept proposes a large urban gesture: A «wall», 550m long, created using high-rise buildings of differing heights, marks the area transition between the city and the surrounding area. The numerous cellular offices needed for the academic inspectors have been lined up to form a slim, linear facility with a double-loaded structure. An awkward concrete building and a temporary commercial warehouse frames the site. Finishing the site by completing the half of a missing building could no longer answer to the given morphology of spontaneously collaged building types. To juxtapose the potential of newness to the unfinished concrete rear resolved the programmatic discontinuity and produced a space that did not want to be perfect. The concept reflects the principle of reflection to adapt scale and dimension of an individual building to a coherent ensemble. The choice to design uniform building heights for the total ensemble and a strict uniform repetition of buildings allow identifying a greater idea of a center. In this way the design strategy passes the applied building code of required small scale individual buildings and adapts it to a relatively big program of an international compound of sport federations.

Valkenburg, the former airport of the Royal Dutch Family, also became available for a new development. The site was neither urban nor countryside, neither central nor peripheral. Arcadia is the counterpart of metropolis, and its image and the representation of Dutch landscape are still strongly identified with it. We used the arcadian condition to employ spatial qualities in the planning process. In contrast to the core related main city, this one is credited to be the anti-system of Zurich. What Zurich doesn’t want or would consider unthinkable, can be realized. The rapid and aggressive growth of the region creates a city scape and declares its geographic midpoint the 7th successful city of Switzerland: Wallisellen. The new masterplan of the Richti Areal provides a large event and congress hall for approx. 30’000 people. Its proximity to Switzerland’s most successful shopping center and the availability of highway and subway connection allow an implementation of housing program and further extensions the an area with the most frequent presence of headquaters.

This industrial presence does not negate a coexistence of any kind of complementary program at all. The West generated its attractiveness truly through a mix of cultural and commercial activities that are juxtaposed, integrated or associated with a dominating architectural and logistical presence of industry. The compensation of the low density of industrial halls causes a densification taking place on the outer edges, on minimal remaining footprints, outside of logistical impacts. Exploring the height becomes symptomatically the only mechanism to multiply the granted surfaces. The result is a fairly accidental placement of towers. The towers are consequently less a landmark but a result of a more site specific motivation: a “contextual” form of locally based high-rises on a relatively compact scale.

There is no longer a capacity or the use of the large span halls. Also, the city of Winterthur has no demand for large scale operations that could support the reuse of these impressive halls. This study evaluates the future possibilities of hall 52 and 53 of Sulzer Industries. Hall 52 stands under protection. We proposed a reuse with smaller office compartments easily to phase. The compartments are constructed as self contained modules and therefore a substantial renovation would not be necessary. Hall 53 is available for a new planning scenario. We proposed a housing project in the form of a small tower hovering above the existing hall, providing a highly urban living model. The continuous façade along the Katharina Sulzer Place enfolds the strength of the public passage. Tower and hall are architectonically separated. The silhouette keeps three larger high rises in Winterthur and adds a compact volume that refers in size and shape to the industrial plant.

Examing the urban development of Kloten, it shares the same result as most former villages and small towns in the periphery of Zurich: The “regional planning” resulted in forgotten centers, closed shops, no public places, no central activities, a few farm houses left, a city office and pieces of lawns. So, what would be the quality of a city maintaining a peripheral center? The open space was the source of the initial quarrels. There were neither ideas of strong, visible actions nor any ambitions to keep the space blank, just fractal residues. Our strategy incooperated to represent the unbuilt as a valid partner to the built; resulting in a tentacle space, branching out to the solid edges of the center, seaming the bits of open space with a polarizing menu, for example: cows and cars, shopping and farms, finally, a new common ground connects the set high-rise buildings.

Without it, nothing would exists. City life was civilized life. Eden, for once, was no garden. It was a city, but unlike the biblical version from which humanity had been for ever banished, this Eden had been created specifically to give people a reason for existing. All prosperous forecasts that the city will have an even more significant part to play in the future that it has played in the past are a careless underestimation of its ingenious reality. Eden was the first City. It will always be there, but essentially, Eden does not have a size, it always fits, even if it does not have to.

The development of these ideas is liberated from a predominant expression of architecture. The series of collages are juxtapositions of a “known” and an “unquestionable” standard of architecture vis – à – vis the risky energy to speculate on architectural and contextual strategies. The applied collage technique is an instrument to reflect and to question given objections and to transform them into a new context. The result intends to express possible and new configurations of well-known architectural decisions. The fact that a chosen and existing condition is strategically manipulated, separates the original from its predominant role of context.

In this spectrum a maximum difference to the renting model attracts most. Advertising focuses on the place, the size and the multiplicity of sleeping and bathing rooms to praise its uniqueness; we started to investigate the consequences of the following (maximum) condition: a sanitary unit for each sleeping room. What would be the real potential in organizing such a plan and what would be the impact for the programmatic rest, the “living”? We created self sustaining clusters and shifted them around. As a result, the simple adjacency of the served and the serving allows one to use a sleeping room like a hotel room. Inside one finds privacy and outside a new freedom to address a living free of intimacy issues. Regardless of size, type and exposure, Box Rule is a simple model to organize the two ultimately different conditions of housing: The private room and the continuous living.

The School Centre Opfikon has been completed.
The centre is part of the extension of the school campus Lättenwiese. The extension foresees two buildings added on the edges of the campus connecting the old town of Opfikon with the emerging area Zurich North, and thus creating a new urban orientation of the school campus.
The low, wide volume of the School Centre refers to the scale of the old town. The new building is a hybrid and combines educational, social and administrative agendas such as a kindergarten, therapy (e.g. speech therapy) and office spaces. The wide corridors, with their parallel set open spaces, establish a solid element within the building and maintain a network of the school and its educational and administrative services under one roof.

In 2005, E2A was awarded the first price in a selective competition. The three new small and compact housing blocks are carefully set together in order to assure the predominant lake view. A subtle change of topography allows placing the houses at different heights forming a slight tribune. The white and wooden façade interpret the traditional lake summer houses of the North.

September 25th 2008, the Heinrich Boell Foundation in Berlin was officially inaugurated. The event was attended by Federal President Horst Köhler.
In 2006, E2A was awarded the first prize in the international competition. The new building was completed in June 2008 (construction time 13 months) and has been in use since. The headquarters houses modern office space for 185 employees of the foundation and a conference and convention centre (Beletage) for around 300 individuals attending numerous events. In terms of high energy efficiency the foundations’ headquarter is avant-garde. Little, but highly-innovative technology provides pleasant indoor climate. The energy consumption undercuts the legal maximum by half, it therefore takes a pioneering role in low-cost and green office and conference buildings in Germany.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation is linked to the political party Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and is committed to promoting democratic decision-making, socio-political engagement, and international understanding around the globe.

Opening: Thursday May 8th, 2008 / Introduction: Prof. Steven Spier, HafenCity Universität Hamburg

The cores of this exhibition, two backlit walls covering the gallery’s windows, present a cosmos of images showing models, collages, renderings and photos of realized and unrealized projects. This fund of images, set out like slides on a light table, allows a wide variety of new sequences and therefore interpretations. The exhibition title refers knowingly to the artificiality of the presented cosmos. At the same time it points out the desire of a speculative approach to deal with the reality and represents the search for an ideal interpretation of the contemporary condition.

The delicate scale and the immanent exposure within the “crown” of Zurich’s silhouette made us design a building profiled with four volumetric setbacks. A horizontally organized connection forms an expressive piano noble connecting all the buildings nearby as well as acting as an internal podium of communication. The piano noble is linked to two dominant cores, one designed to concentrate all office communication and meeting functions, the other to form the library and study areas of the ETH Graphical Collection. The project elaborates an extremely sustainable building concept and operations with a maximum of sufficiency and effectivity.

Three programmatic different volumes form an idea of three houses in one. The public, the private and the utilitarian house generates a micro-cosmos leaving the near context far behind. The GSC house is located in one of the densest populated suburban areas of Greater Zurich.

It is a house with two components of spaces; chambers and voids.
